Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior political figure said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
