In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
