The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
