Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
